Denia - The
Area
Denia, has a mild and typically Mediterranean climate with an
average annual temperature of 19-20 degrees centigrade. It has a
wonderful 20km of sandy beaches and seas ideal for water sports,
swimming or just enjoying the sun.
The beaches have consistently won the ‘blue flag’
award for clean seas and beaches. They are well equipped for a
fun day out, with pedalos, sunshades, and deckchairs for hire as
well as sports and play areas for children and adults.
In 1987 the Montgo mountain was declared a National Park, with
an area of 2,150 hectares in the municipal districts of Denia and
Javea. The aim of the park is to protect the natural vegetation
and fauna of the area, as well as to conserve the archaeological
and cultural aspects. The mountain is 753 meters above sea level
at it's summit and on a clear day you can see the island of
Ibiza. The mountain dominates the landscape of the coastal
plain.
Denia - The Town
The town of Denia itself is dominated by the castle, which stands
imposingly on a 66 meter-high hill at the heart of the town. The
castle was built during the 11th and 12th centuries and is
Islamic in design. Since then several modifications have been
made to the architecture. The castle is now used as the venue for
a wide range of cultural event including outdoor concerts.
It is interesting to stroll around the streets of Denia, to
sample the life of the people who live here. You will find many
typical tapas and cafe bars. The picturesque fishermen’s
quarter is full of small alleys which lead to pretty corners
where you can enjoy the exquisite food of the area, rich in rice
dishes and seafood.
The town has a large number of shops and boutiques where you can
find all manner of goods from leather to jewellery and souvenir
shops to commemorate your visit. The markets offer a wonderful
insight into the daily life of the inhabitants, the fish market
open Monday to Saturday is an excellent opportunity to purchase
freshly caught fish and shellfish. The street market is held on a
Monday morning and here you can purchase a wide variety of
products.
Denia - The Fiestas
During the year there are plenty of celebrations to enliven the
town. In January, the procession of the Three Kings and the
‘Romeria’ to the Santa Paola hermitage. The carnival
is held in the second week of February, closely followed by the
‘Mig Any’, the winter celebration of the Moors and
the Christians. In March there are the Fallas, which celebrate
the arrival of spring, followed by the ‘Hogueras’ of
San Juan in June which announce the coming of Summer with
bonfires on the beaches.
During July the fiestas in honor of the patron saint, Santissima
Sangre are held. This includes the world famous Bous a la Mar,
where young men run in front of the bulls to throw themselves in
the sea. In August the Moors and Christians parade through the
streets dressed in brightly colored authentic costumes.
Denia - House Prices
Denia is a thriving cosmopolitan town and house prices reflect
this. Town houses are reasonably priced but rarely come on the
market. When they do they are snapped up. Villas and country
properties are not cheap but can be found at lower prices than
Denia's more southern cousins, Javea, Moraira and Calpe.
