Gandia - It's Background
The people of Gandia and visitors can now enjoy a new heart to the town. Gandia’s redesigned historic centre was opened at the end of 1998, with the pedestrianisation of the Calle Mayor and adjacent streets, the nerve-centre of the old town. The image of a town centre choked by cars and unbearable traffic is now a thing of the past. With this historic redesign the town’s people have a better quality of life and pedestrians can now enjoy a pleasant walk. The historic /commercial centre brings a large collection of shops offering a huge variety of articles in the vanguard of modern fashion. Several buildings are worth discovering : Escuelas Pías, founded by Duke San Francisco Borgia and given to the Company of Jesus is situated at the entrance to the town’s historic centre. After a long rehabilitation the building was inaugurated in 1998 recovering its previous cultural and educational use with the relocation of the Open University, the permanent Adult Education School and the Scuole Pie.
