Jalon - The Town
& Area
Jalón (or Xaló) is undoubtedly one of the most
attractive towns of la Marina. Its natural beauty, its
deep-rooted customs together with its genteel and hospitable
nature make it an attractive and much-visited town.
The Valley of Jalon, also known as the Valle del Pop, represents
one of the most popular and admired views of the heart of the
Costa Blanca. In the towns that form the Valley we find: Murla,
Benichembla, Parcent, Alcalali, Jalon and Lliber.
One of the threads that join this valley is the rural flavor
that these towns share, the gastronomy, the local celebrations,
and the Jalon River which runs through them. There is a wide
offer of activities in this area (pedestrian walks, mountain
cycling, Eco tourist routes,..) that combine adventure and
enjoyment of nature. The valley consists of a combination of
large flat areas of vines and almonds, which contrast against the
figure of the mountains surrounding them.
With it's excellent weather and environment, it is an ideal
place to rest, no crowds or masses of tourists, yet with
excellent services. Jalon, the main town of the valley, is
internationally known for the production of table wine and the
famous mistela. We should mention the wines, and its gastronomic
importance, home made sausages, and the fine selection of pastry
and sweets.
It is an obligation to visit the famous rastro or flee market of
antique articles, which takes place each Saturday and is one of
the biggest of the Costa Blanca. The closest beach is Moraira,
about 30 minutes drive away.
Jalon - The Interesting Local Dialect
In the villages of the Marina Alta, as well as in some places of
the Marina Baja (like Tarbena), or in the area of the
Alcoià and La Safor, a very peculiar form of Valenciano is
spoken by the local people, presenting features that don't
seem to belong to the southern standard of this language, whilst
lacking some characteristics that would be normally understood as
being typical from here.
The reason for this is the re-population of the district by
Majorcan people after the expulsion of the Moors in 1609. This
produced an exchange of languages coming from two different
areas, homes of two distinct dialects, the Valenciano originally
from the western side of the Catalan, and the Mallorquín
coming from the eastern side of the Catalan. In other words, at
the beginning of the 17th century, the majority of the population
living in this area was originally from Mallorca, thus taking the
place (two third of the population) of the Moorish people that
were expelled. In this way, contact was established between the
newly arrived people speaking Mallorquín and the local
Christians, who spoke Valenciano.
After that, due to the internal emigration movements within the
País Valenciano and the relationships established with
people belonging to other areas, this people originally from
Mallorca and their descendants started replacing the most
remarkable peculiarities of their dialect - peculiarities that
would make communication more difficult - with the solutions
offered by the Valenciano of the area, that is, the southern
Valenciano.
Nevertheless, as it is natural, these peculiarities didn't
disappear completely, rather they left an important trace in the
way people speak in the district, especially in the most isolated
places where access is more difficult (like the Valle de
Gallinera and Tárbena, where people would still use the
article sa: sa dona). (written by Josep Àngel Mas i
Castells)
Jalon - History
In 1472 the Moors living in Jalón sent a selection of
wines to the Valencian Court and negotiated with traders in
Jávea the sale of a product which in time would become the
base of Marina Alta's economy: raisins produced in the
traditional 'riu-raus'. Jalón's wines belong
to the 'denominación de origen' of Alicante and
raisins are still produced in small quantities.
Jalon - House Prices
The Jalon valley offers value for money. Villages such as
Benichembla are becoming increasingly popular but the astute
buyer can still pick up a bargain. A trip to the beach might take
you 45 minutes but the relaxed lifestyle more than
compensates.
