Oliva - The Town
and Area
Oliva town, situated eighty kilometres south of the city of
Valencia amid orange groves, offers visitors a taste of
Spain’s historical past with its narrow cobbled streets,
Moorish castle remains, the blue domed churches of San Roque
constructed on the site of a mosque, and the neoclassic 16th
century church of Santa Maria la Mayor . The tree-lined
boulevard, in the more modern part of town, is home to the weekly
Friday market, and the permanent covered central market offers
daily fresh produce.
Oliva’s 10 km stretch of beautiful, unspoilt, sandy beaches
bordered by dunes with the backdrop of surrounding hills will
delight the beach-goer. The marshes with its complex network of
lanes and canals, inland from Oliva were recently declared a
Natural Park. The unique vegetation of canes and grasses makes
the area one of the most interesting wetland zones on the
Mediterranean coast. The chain of inland mountains is worth a
visit for the panoramic views and excellent restaurants.
Oliva’s Club Nautica offers sailing courses whilst sea
kayaks and windsurfs can be hired on the beach. An eighteen hole
golf course designed by Spain’s famous Seve Ballesteros
will entice the golfer. A modern sports complex with indoor and
outdoor pools caters to the year-round swimmer.
Oliva - It's Background and History
The people of the province enjoy their ‘fiestas’ and
this is certainly true of Oliva. The ‘Fallas’ is a
fiesta in which satirical effigies, made from papiermaché
are located around town and burnt on the last night along with a
great fireworks display. Holy week is another ‘must’
for Olivenses and visitors alike with the Corpus Cristo
procession winding its way to the castle and through the streets
of the old town.
Walk round Oliva and you will understand its History, written
through centuries, it is there to see - in the design of the
streets, the houses, the fountains, the gardens and the
Monuments. Visit the Churches of Sta. Maria, St. Roc and Rebollet
and go through the gates of the city: Fossar's, Verge
Maria's and St. Vicent's. Next, admire Mayan's house
and the houses in Tamarit Street and walk peacefully in C.
Moreres, St. Vicent, Sr. Cristòfol...and its surroundings.
Finding the Towers of the City Wall and other details such as the
Count's Palace's windows will make you want to discover
the rest of the treasures that this Mediterranean Town offers
Oliva - House Prices
Like Gandia, prices have increased in Oliva but the town has the
added advantage in being just that bit further from Valencia for
the Valencian resident commuter. This has slowed the growth in
prices. Bargains are still to be picked up especially in the
inland towns and villages nearby where the traditional Spanish
way of life can still be enjoyed.
